Making the Investment

Therapy costs a lot

You might be at this page because you saw my fee and thought “Wow! I had no idea it would be that much” or “There’s no way I can afford to come here.” I get it; therapy costs a lot. When you come to to see me, you are getting the best.

I have graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, many years of experience, and advanced training in the best couples therapy approaches out there. When you come here, you are getting one-on-one attention from a therapist that has been in practice for almost two decades. And that’s not cheap.

You are worth the investment

You are worth the investment. Your relationship, your happiness, getting your wants and needs met is worth the investment. Sit with that for a second and see how it feels. You are worth it. You deserve the best help your money can buy.

Using insurance is an option

Even when you know you are worth it and you’re ready to make the investment. you still may not have the funds available to afford weekly sessions. If you don’t have it; you don’t have it. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

If you or your partner have health insurance, you may be able to use your insurance to cover counseling. You’d have to check with them. If you decide to use your insurance, get a list of approved providers and start looking for someone who fits your needs. Ask whether the marriage counselors you are considering have experience and training working with couples. Ask how frequently they have availability to see you. If they can only see you once every 3-4 weeks, keep looking.

Low-fee clinics are available

Some universities, community mental health agencies, and non-profits have counseling services available at low fees, often based on your income. These organizations are able to offer lower fee services because they have funding from government agencies or grants and because they often employ less experienced therapists who are working under supervision until they can be fully licensed by the state.

When you go to one of these clinics, you may not be able to select the therapist you want to work with. I recommend that you ask to be placed with someone who has experience working with your type of issue. You might also ask about the qualifications of the licensed therapist supervising them. If the supervisor is experienced with the issues you’re facing, you can feel pretty confident that your therapist will get good help and support in learning how to help you best. Again, make sure there is availability to see you weekly or every 2 weeks at a minimum.

You have to decide what works for you

I don’t want you to come in to your couples therapy sessions stressed because you don’t know how you’re going to find the money to pay for them. And it’s not going to be good for your progress if you have to cancel sessions frequently because you can’t afford them. A little extra work in the beginning to find a therapist or clinic that will work for you (approach, availability, and price) is going to be worth your effort in the long run. You’re worth it!
